Since 2023, the Wahl Group has been dismantling a piece of history on the edge of the Rhine. On the site of the decommissioned and partially dismantled M\u00fclheim-K\u00e4rlich nuclear power plant, work has recently focused on the former T2 extraction structure, including the 60-meter-long connecting channels. This challenging dismantling project required precise technology and presented the DA member company with several challenges.<\/p>\n

A chain excavator with hydraulic demolition shears first dismantled the heavy reinforced concrete of the bulkhead walls of the inlet structure and then backfilled the resulting cavity. This created a stable surface for the construction of the shoring with the pile driver.<\/p>\n

Flood delays work at short notice<\/strong><\/p>\n

The work had to be interrupted several times due to flooding, but could be quickly resumed. To prevent water from entering the construction pit, a waterproof construction pit enclosure was erected. The remaining concrete structures were dismantled using a chain excavator and smaller jobs were completed using a mini-excavator.<\/p>\n

The space for the machines between the sheet pile walls and the remaining concrete structures was very limited. Nevertheless, the massive reinforced concrete construction of the connecting channels was demolished in a significantly shorter time than planned. The resulting demolition concrete was crushed into transportable pieces and sustainably recycled as concrete chippings or RC material.<\/p>\n
