Keeping an Eye on Contaminants, Focusing on Material Loops – Rethinking Demolition
The building transition doesn’t start with new construction – it starts with demolition. Under this guiding principle, the Deutscher Abbruchverband e.V. (DA) will be represented at the Klimafestival für die Bauwende in Berlin on November 19, 2025, with the workshop “Keeping an Eye on Contaminants, Focusing on Material Loops – Rethinking Demolition.”
When: November 19, 2025 | 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Where: Breakout Area (D) – 1
Demolition as the Starting Point for Circular Economy
Anyone discussing climate protection and resource efficiency in construction must not overlook the beginning of the value chain: selective demolition and safe contaminant remediation. These are the keys to returning valuable building materials to the circular economy and enabling a true circular approach in the construction sector.
In this session, the Deutscher Abbruchverband will demonstrate how sustainable demolition already works today – technically, legally, and with a realistic view of available materials. The central question is how planners and demolition actors can collaborate more effectively to embed reuse and high-quality recycling from the very start of planning.
Practical Expertise from Industry Professionals
Experienced demolition experts will share their know-how and show what is already possible in practice:
André Widera, Head of Demolition Technology, Explosives, and Contaminants, Deutscher Abbruchverband
Mathias Heermann, Managing Director, Heermann Abbruch GmbH, and Board Member of the DA
Louis Delker, Managing Director, LD Umwelt GmbH
Together, they will explore the steps needed to ensure demolition is understood and implemented as an integral part of the building transition.
Building Transition Begins with Demolition
Through its participation in the Klimafestival für die Bauwende, the Deutscher Abbruchverband emphasizes that circular economy starts not on the construction site, but with demolition. Only when contaminants are safely removed and materials are recovered in a clean, sorted manner can we pave the way toward a truly sustainable construction sector.
The Klimafestival für die Bauwende takes place on November 19–20 in Berlin. The Deutscher Abbruchverband will be on-site presenting the workshop: “Keeping an Eye on Contaminants, Focusing on Material Loops – Rethinking Demolition.”
