Dismantling of gymnasium in Rheine in favour of new three-court sports hall

An old sports hall in Rheine had to be demolished in favour of the construction of a new triple gymnasium for the new Elsa Brandström School. DA member company Erich Tönnes GmbH was commissioned by the city of Rheine to professionally demolish the hall at the Emsland Stadium. From the beginning of May to mid-June, the 50-year-old, 850 m2 building was dismantled over an area of 5200 m2.

The initial remediation work included the removal of 8 tonnes of asbestos from the sports floor covering and 3 tonnes of artificial mineral fibres from the remediation. In addition, a total of 20 tonnes of waste wood and 50 tonnes of mixed construction waste was produced, which was disposed of professionally.

A new CAT 330 with a weight of 30 tonnes and a CAT 323 with 24 tonnes were used for the dismantling itself. Lorries transported a total of 200 semi-trailers of building rubble to Erich Tönnes GmbH’s own recycling site in Emsdetten. The building rubble, which was of very good quality, was processed here.

The demolition project was accompanied by species conservation, as there were bat roosts in the building that had to be relocated.

The construction of a new secondary school with a new sports hall is expected to begin in October 2025.
